There is a dangerous myth in the AI governance conversation: that it is only relevant to large enterprises. The thinking goes like this — if you are a 10-person company using ChatGPT for customer service emails, you do not need an AI governance framework. That is a problem for Microsoft and Google.
This thinking is wrong, and it will cost businesses dearly. Every company using AI — from a solo consultant with a GPT wrapper to a mid-market retailer with an AI recommendation engine — is making decisions about data, fairness, transparency, and accountability. The question is not whether you need governance. The question is whether you are governing consciously or by accident.
Why SMBs Cannot Afford to Ignore AI Governance
Large enterprises have compliance teams, legal departments, and dedicated AI ethics boards. When something goes wrong — a biased hiring algorithm, a chatbot that gives medical advice, a pricing model that discriminates by ZIP code — they have institutional shock absorbers. Write a One-Page AI Policy

Pin it in your Slack workspace. Add it to your employee handbook. Review it quarterly. The act of writing the policy forces you to confront decisions you have been making implicitly — and that alone is valuable.
Template question: “Is it acceptable for our team to paste customer emails into ChatGPT for drafting responses?” Most companies have never explicitly decided this, yet it is happening every day.
Implement Human-in-the-Loop for Anything Customer-Facing
If AI is generating emails, social posts, proposals, or chatbot responses that customers see, a human should review them before they go out. This is not about distrusting AI — it is about building trust with your customers.

Add a simple note to your website chatbot: “I am an AI assistant. A human team member can join this conversation at any time.” Add a footer to AI-generated emails: “This draft was prepared with AI assistance.” Add a disclosure to your proposals: “Research and data analysis supported by AI tools.”
